The Chinese government has frozen hiring of about 70,000 employees in the United States, leaving some in the country to work on new applications for their degrees, Reuters reported.
The hiring freeze was imposed on August 15, and it will run for two months, Reuters said.
Chinese students in the US are among the biggest employers in the nation, accounting for about 20% of all college graduates in the state of California.
China has been one of the world’s top employers of students and scholars in recent years, hiring around 5,000 in 2017.
The US has been facing a shortage of students, with many universities struggling to fill positions and colleges and universities across the country struggling to find qualified candidates.
The university of Washington has said it expects a shortage in engineering students to increase in 2018.
